Local 12-Year-Old Entrepreneur Bakes Delightful Dog Cakes
May 21, 2008
Baton Rouge-based specialty food company expands its product line with three new treats.
The tiny kitchen bustles with activity—the cathartic whirring, clicks and buzzing. The oven timer hums and the warm smell of baking wafts through the house. Clad in oven mitts, Bret Windhauser opens the oven and peers in. “They're ready,” he says.
But the 12-year-old isn't pulling pies out of the oven; he's helping mom, Marlene Most, whip up batches of dog treats. In 2007 Most launched her own specialty food company, Most Delightful Foods. A veterinary physiologist by degree, Most spent her career working with people food as a registered dietician in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. But when Most's five-month-old puppy, Heidi, was diagnosed with a forelimb deformity that left her crippled, Most happened upon her business idea.
“Bret's always enjoyed the whole business and baking aspect,” Marlene says of her son.
So it's fitting then, that when Marlene was asked if she made birthday cakes for dogs, Bret would become involved. “Mom, we've got to do something with those cakes,” Bret told Marlene.
The preteen was so enthusiastic about the project he wrote his own business plan, helped bake the
prototypes, worked on promotions and even set the price for the cakes.
“Bret was so enticed, I thought this would be a good thing for him to manage,” Marlene says of the dog cake idea. With a little tenacity and a lot of legwork, the Delightful Dog Cakes were born. “We aim for the customers that like to include their dogs in celebrations, whether it is their birthday, a holiday, a new addition to the family, a reminder of your love for them, or just as a present. Our customers like to spoil their dogs,” says Bret of his cakes.
The bundt-style carrot spice cakes are topped with colored bows to match the occasion. For example, multicolored bows top birthday cakes and pastel bows are to celebrate the arrival of puppies.
“We wish to offer high-quality flavorful snacks for dogs made with all-natural ingredients and no preservatives,” the 12-year-old businessman explains. “We want to provide a product for people who desire to fill the tummy of a worthy dog. Our image is ‘wholesome sophistication’—a natural and appealing style.”
Marlene's first product, Delightful Dog Bites, debuted in late 2007. Today, Delightful Dog Bites are available in stores across Baton Rouge, along with three new products, debuting in June.
Delightful Dog Bites are all natural and handmade locally. The treats contain a mix of Louisiana sweet potatoes, rolled oats, red tart cherry juice, cinnamon, molasses, flax seed and whole-wheat flour. The treats have a crunchy texture and amazing aroma.
Delightful Dog Tender Bites have the same ingredients, but have a chewier texture as an alternative.
Delightful Dog Frost Bites are a mix made from antioxidant-rich sweet potatoes, red tart cherry juice, and turmeric. Simply add water, portion into small cups (included in the package) and then freeze.
